Creating new users from the shell

Expertise level: Easy

To create a new user from the shell, use the following procedure:

  • Login with SSH as root.
  • Use the command useradd to create a new user:

(Let's say that the new user is "user")

useradd user

The home directory will then be /home/user.

  • Now set the password for the user using the following command:
passwd user

You will then be prompted to enter the password twice.
