Upgrading Ubuntu OS

Expertise level: Medium

Ubuntu releases a new version of their OS twice a year. If you are considering an upgrade, make sure the new OS is compatible with your server's hardware and software. If you aren't certain, contact iWeb Customer Service. Before proceeding on your own, we highly recommend you test the upgrade on a second non-critical server prior to performing the upgrade. More information is available here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

To upgrade follow these simple instructions:

NOTE: iWeb no longer supports Ubuntu 13.10 and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is NOT compatible with iWeb Smart Servers.

iWeb recommends performing a backup prior to upgrading your OS to avoid potential data loss.

1. Log into SSH

2. Update and upgrade your apt-get modules with these commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

3. Begin the upgrade process using these commands:

sudo apt-get install update-manager-core
sudo do-release-upgrade

That's it!
