Enabling Shell access for users

Expertise level: Medium

Shell access refers to SSH, which is a way of securely accessing a server remotely. Shell access is potentially a powerful tool used to manage a server, but can also be problematic if the wrong commands are used.

The administrator of a dedicated server has complete access to the server and can make any changes whatsoever to the file system. Users, however, can be restricted to a normal shell or to a jailed shell through the use of jailshell. Jailshell restricts the user to their own files, and is strongly recommended to ensure a higher level of security.

To manage shell access, start by logging on to WHM as root.

Open the "Account Functions" menu.

Click on "Manage Shell Access".

Finally, you can enable or disable Jailshell or the normal shell access.
